Advanced Metal Treatment for Enhanced Longevity

Surface durability plays a crucial role in determining the longevity of metal components. When wear, friction and corrosion are addressed early in the parts manufacturing cycle, industries such as automotive, construction, defense and energy experience fewer disruptions with parts that last significantly longer.

That’s where the surface engineering expertise of Techniques Surfaces Innovation (TSI) becomes a reliability lever. TSI helps manufacturers tackle these issues by engineering metal surfaces for stronger wear, lower friction and better corrosion protection, with processes designed to scale from trials to high-volume production. It is the Canadian subsidiary of HEF Group, a French surface engineering company founded in 1953.

TSI’s competence spans tribology and photonics, and it also develops surface solutions for hydrogen applications such as electrolyzers and fuel cells. Its advanced capabilities include femtosecond laser processing, functionalized powders and engineered friction parts, composite self-lubricating bushings and nitrided pins, trusted by global giants like Caterpillar.

“We handle everything in-house, from machines to consumables, ensuring consistent service quality across all regions we serve,” says Daniel Varadaradjou, international business developer.

This approach is reinforced by TSI’s employee ownership structure, which enhances financial stability and enables quick investments in new capacity and customer-specific solutions. This supports both small-scale experimentation and high-volume production, reducing risk and ensuring flexibility in meeting market demands.

SURFACE TECHNOLOGIES BUILT FOR PERFORMANCE

TSI specializes in salt-bath nitriding and nitrocarburizing, along with physical vapor deposition (PVD). In its salt-bath thermochemical process, the surface is enriched with nitrogen and carbon, creating a compound layer and diffusion zone within the substrate rather than a deposited coating. This improves hardness, wear performance, low-friction behavior and corrosion resistance. The process uses HEF Group’s salt formulations and well-known recipes such as ARCOR and QPQ, which are run on TSI’s in-house line from degreasing through treatment to ensure consistent results.

Beyond surface performance, the nitriding line is designed for faster processing. Compared to plasma and gas nitriding, salt bath nitriding is more efficient, with a typical turnaround time of five to seven days. Factors such as treatment temperature, changes in surface roughness and optional finishing like sandblasting, tumbler polishing and newer polishing methods are carefully managed to optimize results.

TSI excels in vacuum thin-film coatings, providing customized solutions to boost performance across industries. PVD, the final stage in many processes, requires precise preparation to maintain coating integrity. One of the standout coatings, diamond-like carbon (DLC), offers exceptional hardness and low friction, making it ideal for applications in automotive, medical and high-performance machinery where wear resistance and friction reduction are crucial.

SUSTAINABILITY AND FLEXIBLE DELIVERY MODELS

One clear example of TSI’s impact comes from a folding machine manufacturer that struggled with persistent corrosion issues during overseas shipments. Initially, small trial batches were processed at TSI to test a surface solution capable of withstanding long transit times and harsh conditions. After consistent positive results, production volumes grew steadily, and today, TSI processes weekly batches of several thousand pounds to support the shipment of these machines to Europe.

TSI’s coatings are used on hockey skate blades, where friction and surface response matter at the highest level. The same coating expertise, including DLC, is also used at high volume in automotive applications, demonstrating its scalability beyond niche use cases. In addition to this, TSI’s nitriding technology is widely adopted for hydraulic cylinders, a critical application requiring both strong wear resistance and corrosion protection in demanding conditions.

With a strong focus on sustainability and efficient delivery, both TSI and HEF embrace practices that enhance operational effectiveness. TSI’s Eco Clean approach recycles salt and water to minimize waste, while shop-in-shop models integrate surface engineering directly into workflows, enabling faster turnaround times and ensuring confidentiality. This approach allows for a seamless transition from proof of concept to full production, providing durable and reliable performance in industrial applications.
